Rhythms of Restlessness series

2024

Mixed media drawings on paper
40 x 30 cm unframed

This body of work is informed by material gathered on visits to the sculptural concrete reliefs made by artist Fred Millett in 1965 for the University of York. The rhythms of forms are compelling.

With some of the forms as starting points, this series of mixed media drawings on paper is made working in layers using rhythmic drawing processes. The title comes from Nikolaus Pevsner’s remarks on the panels as ‘restless’ in his assessment in 1972 of the new buildings and their siting being visually ‘the best of new universities’.

‘drawing produces a rhythmic configuration of the real born from the very rhythm of the body’ - Daniel Arasse, ‘The Memory of Drawing’
